ActiveX (programming) A type of COM component that can self-register, also known as an "ActiveX control". All COM objects implement the "IUnknown" interface but an ActiveX control usually also implements some of the standard interfaces for embedding, user interface, methods, properties, events, and persistence. ActiveX controls were originally called. So for the purposes of products in the Software Toolbox catalog, we’ve updated our terminology to use the ActiveX name as well. ActiveX and Existing OLE Controls. The new ActiveX controls are optimized for code size and downloading time. The older OLE controls were implemented with all the mandatory interfaces and possibly contain things, like property pages, which are not required.
